Subject: Invitation for a European meeting regarding
soy
Dear friends,
Over the past period, the soy issue has entered the
agenda of many European organisations. As some of you
know, in the Netherlands a group of about ten NGOs
joint forces last year with the objective to exchange
information and develop joint concrete activities on
soy. Some of the results of this cooperation are:
- a joint work plan for the coming two years
with the following strategy: we aim to mobilise Dutch
and International companies active in the soy chain to
adopt sourcing and investment criteria that contribute
to reducing impacts of soy on the short term and to
sustainability of soy production in the long term. To
do this, alliances between companies (responding to
their policy on social corporate responsibility),
NGO’s, financiers and governments are foreseen.
Experience with other resources and commodities
(timber, coffee, oil palm) shows that public, media
and / or government pressure are indispensable to
convince mainstream companies to (invest in) improving
their practice. Thus, the strategy contains the
following elements: dialogue with industry and banks;
public awareness raising and political awareness
raising and support. Most of the activities are
already in implementation.
- a member of the Dutch group (Cordaid) is
participating in the Organising Committee of the Round
Table on Sustainable soy to be held in Foz de Iguacu
in March 2005.
- Dutch (financial) support for local actions
and activities such as the ‘Articulacao soja in
Brazil’; the development of minimum criteria for the
production of soy in Brazil to be followed by
Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina as well as the
development of a portfolio of soy produced by family
farmers.
- The production of a number of studies and
reports on the issue as well as networking activities
among organisations in Europe and Latin America.
- Ongoing dialogue with our La tin American
counterparts.
The soy issue has many angles and there are many ways
to address the issue. Many organisations are working
on it or showed their interest. We feel it would be
useful to have a meeting with European groups to
discuss and possible agree on issues such as:
- what could be our main objective
(production of soy without environmental and/or social
impact?)?
- what are the strategic actions to develop
to achieve our goal? This can be related to for
example the three issues identified by the Dutch
groups:
1. dialogue with industry and banks (objectives
of such dialogue, target companies, use of minimum
criteria, previous experiences with these kind of
discussions, expectations, preparation Round Table
etc.)
2. public awareness raising campaign (what should
be the main message to the public, what can we do on a
European level)
3. &
nbsp; policy work (strategy towards and role of our
governments, possibilities on the European level)
- possible joint actions on a European level
and where in Europe do we see the best opportunities
for several options or issues (mainstreaming
sustainable soy, cattle-feed, retailing)?
The date proposed for the meeting is Monday the 22nd
of November, probably at the office of Misereor in
Aachen, Germany.
We would very much appreciate it if you could let us
know, preferably this week, or beginning of next week,
if you are interested to p articipate in this meeting.
Your suggestions on the development of the agenda are
also welcome.
We include a list of organisations invited so far. If
you feel there are crusial organisations missing,
please let us know so we can invite them too.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Regards,
Tamara Mohr
