Exporting Risk: New Findings from the FASE Pesticide Project
Since 1990, FASE has published reports on the export of banned and other hazardous pesticides to destinations in the developing world. The most recent report, covering the years 1997-2000, was recently published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health.
"More than 3 billion pounds of pesticide products were exported during this period, an average rate of 45 tons per hour," said FASE senior editor Carl Smith, who directs the Pesticide Project. "This included nearly 65 million pounds of pesticides that are either forbidden or severely restricted in the US."
The report notes some positive signs, most notably sharp declines in the export of pesticides that have been identified as targets for reduction or elimination in the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) treaties.
"Despite this, hundreds of millions of pounds of pesticides were exported that have been designated 'extremely hazardous' by the World Health Organization, identified as carcinogens, or associated with endocrine disrupting effects," said Mr. Smith. "The majority of these shipments were to destinations in the developing world."
"While these findings show that progress is possible, they also make it clear that the focus of international efforts should be expanded," he added. "From public health and environmental protection perspectives, exports of hazardous pesticides remain unacceptably high."
